    Adamantia's E36 328i Convertible Attempt #1

Right, having not yet even put my 320i coupe up for sale (it also needs MOTing this month, but hopefully shall pass with flying colours) I gave in to temptation and obtained myself a rather rough E36 328i convertible.

Been wanting one for ages, and this one came up at a good price (esp. considering the value of parts if I wanted to break it) with a full years MOT.
    Without further ado:

The car is really rough around the edges. It's a 97 registered M52, built late 96 and at 136k. It's had a replacement block from BMW at some point so no nikasil worries.
I like the m3 bumpers and skirts, as well as the scorpion back box, but I'm not a huge fan of the fake m3 mirrors and the alpina wheels. It also has PDC and 18 button OBC with check control, smoked rear and front clear lights and clear side repeaters, full black leather interior with little wear and some sort of stiffened suspension.

I will be selling the private plate and the wheels as I am not really attracted to them, and the money can be put towards fixing the huge array of foibles.

The roof is fully automatic, but needs a new front locking motor and a new screen. It also needs a damn good clean of the headlining and exterior.

The aircon doesn't work and needs troubleshooting. The power steering pump makes a horrible racket and loses power at low speed manoeuvres, thus needs replacement. One (or more) of the previous owners has made a mess out of several areas of the car and seems to have bodged some things.

I'm already in the process of removing the largest collection of electronic gadgetry ever seen.
    It has (well had )
    -really bodged stereo
    -thatcham alarm (not connected)
    -hands free phone kit
    -radar detector
-steering wheel controls (for a wheel that is not there)

It came out of the factory with an M-wheel, but only has a normal one now (?), not a concern as I would have put my E39 m-wheel on anyway with cruise and stereo controls.
The alpina stickers are coming off, I need to source loads of little things like bits of trim, badges, fog light, aerial etc. At some point it will need a little bit of paint on the rear arches and the drivers door due to rust and scrapes.

Looks good there pal, a quick tidy up and she'll be spot on!! what you going to replace the wheels with? Could I be so bold as to suggest the M-Tech flat door strips if you hadn't thought of it? I just like the way they tie the front and rear bumpers together.

Mostly just cosmetics then, shouldn't be too hard to sort out and you'll have yourself a decent motor

Alpina sticker on the front wing looks funny

Should be a nice project and nothing too difficult (read expensive) to sort either, which is always a bonus.

Yeah, like others said, it's a great base for a project & most of the mods shouldn't be hard or costly. I'll watch the space indeed.

    Cheers guys, appreciate the comments!

There's just loads of little things, some more important than others. The fuel pump sender needs replacing (got 1 waiting to go on), the instrument cluster lcd is funky so needs sorting, will undoubtedly need new bushes all round at some point soon too!

It will all add up, plus the work of doing my leccy bits like cruise control and steering wheel stereo controls same as my old 320. I expect vanos needs attention as well :(

It's a nice project though, and best of all after a few little tweaks it will be fine as a daily driver, not that I need to commute, then I can do the work as and when

Well it has been a while. Unfortunately I have been busy with other things and thus it's taken longer than expected to get on with the work needed.

I have at least fixed the annoying things that would stop me driving it.
The fuel pump was replaced so the fuel gauge now works. Found it has a third of a tank of fuel in it!
    Passenger fog light replaced.

Swapped the alpina replica alloys off ready for sale and put my style 30 alloys on off my 320i (which now has bog standard 96+ year 15" alloys)
I also removed the stupid alpina stickers.
    Looking much better:
    -2012-10-06-17-28-02-jpg-2012-10-06-17-28-16-jpg

All the electric junk I removed from behind and in the dash (apart from the alarm siren). Ignoring the Head unit all this crap didn't work.:
    -2012-10-06-17-28-51-jpg

I also battled with the power steering pump today, which was making a very annoying, loud whining noise whenever the steering was turned. Replaced it and flushed the system with new ATF, now it's silent!

Finally I replaced the instrument cluster with a second hand item to fix the broken LCD screen. Strangely the tampering dot hasn't illuminated and the car is displaying the new instrument cluster mileage (which is a good 20k lower than the car). I have tried the cluster self-test but it still hasn't illuminated.
    Before:
    -2012-10-06-17-35-48-jpg
    After:
    -2012-10-06-17-52-23-jpg

Now the car is driveable, but I am currently not insuring (and thus driving) it until I either sell my 320i or the MID shows the car uninsured.

Get rid of that plate and the M3 mirrors, paint those calipers black/silver again and get a set of ambers! Thats what I think anyway!

Good Progress Pal, going to look really smart.
