This project is going to be a little bit different to most. My dad owned a 1992 E36 325i SE in HellRot which I absolutely fell in love with as a kid. He sadly sold the car when I was 13, I always thought I'd own the car when I started driving but obviously he wasn't going to store it for 4 years, lol.
Here are some pictures of the car when we had it (approx 17 years ago).
Since then this car has always played in the back of my mind, It's the one car I wanted but never could have so periodically I looked on the internet searching the reg number, just in case it ever popped up.
To my amazement it did, when I spotted this thread: http://www.bmwforums.info/projects/5...5i-saloon.html now in North Yorkshire. It looked very much at the end of it's life as the tread progressed but I didn't care, I had to have it!!!!
I spoke to George (gsavill90) and arranged to buy the car as he had stripped it to scrap it. It cost 5 times the cars worth to bring it back from Yorkshire to Reading but I couldn't wait.
When the car arrived it was it a real bad way. George (the previous owner) had already said the subframe was shot. When I got the car on a lift we discovered it had been jacked up in the wrong place previously which had killed the floor. The roof around the sunroof is rotten, the sills, rear arches, windscreen smashed, engine half stripped + everything that had already been sold. It had nothing on it that was worth reusing.
Is that a drag strip number in the rear window? Time slips were found in the glovebox, lol.
It had about 80,000 miles when we had it.
It was tired and you need to know when to cut your losses. This car by every definition was scrap!!!
I bought another HellRot 1992 E36 SE Saloon to base the project on. This car has 80,000ish miles on it, FSH, MOT'd, Taxed and rust free. First thing to do was transfer the reg number from the old car (this is how I remember the car, the whole project wouldn't be worth doing without the reg).
So the build begins onto a new car. It might not be to everyones taste but this car (even down to the head unit) has to be exactly how it was 17 years ago. This build is all about the memories.
