I have a 328i with a b&m short shift fitted.
As most people know it can be very notchy and frustrating to use sometimes.
I lubed it up which helped but it still is quite notchy to use.
After doing some searching, lots of people recommend a weighted gear knob so I thought I'd look at getting one.
There are a couple of options for them
1. The storm motorwerks V1 @ 520g
2. The UUC @ 700g ish
3. The BMW clubsport one
All of which are more than £60 so because I work as a design engineer and have a degree in Product Design I though I would give it a go to design and make one.
Firstly I pulled my old one off and measured it up.
At work I use Catia v5 (3D modelling software) so one morning I threw together a design. Which would weigh 600g when machined from Stainless Steel.
and a quick 2D drawing:
Now because I didn't want to spend time machining this I decided to make some prototypes from modelling foam.
This would ensure it feels good in my hand etc.
This felt very good but a little too large for my hand. So.....
This one felt much better but still not right.
Rev 3 comes tomorrow!
