Hi recently had a problem with my x5 4.4i on a trip to the coast. On cruise control as I was climbing a hill went into trans fail safe mode as it dropped a gear to climb . I came to a stop and switched on and off. The error went away only to appear as I climbed next hill on cruise control. I drove for a while then switched on and off , didn't clear this time. Went into limp mode was still drive able but at a slower speed to pull off . After I reached my destination. I let it stand for a day . Next day both transfailsafe program and engine fail safe prog both on. All codes on DME WAS CLEARED it drove fine but next day the engine fail safe program came on again signaling a problem of actuator motor #2 . Thanks to this forum , I now know that's the left vvt motor. Can this be recond , sometimes fails due to sludge in the case. When removing them they turn fine and doesn't show any damage . Could this just be sludge that built up . I also have a coolant problem with taking water with no apparent leaks. I have changed the expansion tank as this was leaking. The car still uses water??
