Hi All, Joined the Forum last week after starting to have problems with DSC warning light flashing & car feeling "unstable" after having 2 new tyres fitted onto front of my 2006 X3 2.0 D SE with 80k miles on it, (only owned the car a couple of months but had an identical car from 2006 to 2010).
On buying the car it had 4 good,6mm tread , Accelera Tyres fitted but as I had never heard of them & preferred a more M&S treaded tyre, when I got a puncture that wasn't repairable I had Event Tyres fit me 2 new Pirelli Scorpions onto the front. This was the start of the flashing DSC lights & twitchy handling so after getting back onto Event Tyres they said I needed to fit matching Pirellis to the rear also as the "mismatch" between axles was most likely upsetting the transfer box.
This sounded a bit strange so firstly took the car to Bavarian Motor Warehouse in Huddersfield who had been very good with the son-in-laws 3series, 2007 M-sport. At short notice they hooked it up to their diagnostics after a quick test drive & suggested it was a transfer box fault which may need an exchange box or mine to be rebuilt but that the possible solution of 2 more new tyres on the rear was a much cheaper option if I wanted to try that first.
Event were booked & fitted the extra tyres, Pirelli Scorpions again, to the rear whilst it was still in Bavarian's place. They reset the settings on the box??, took it for a test drive & hey presto....cured!
I ended up with a bill for just short of £500 from Event Tyres after one puncture , but did have 4 New Pirellis to show for it, and a very sensible bill for £88 from Bavarian for all their time & diagnostics, ( they even reset some of the car's options, e.g. drive-away central locking, indicators flash now to signal remote lock/unlock & comfort opening/ closing of all 4 windows from the remote).
Motto is; Look at Forums like this before you buy a fresh motor, they may make you aware of potential faults to watch out for.
Find a good Independent Garage like Bavarian Motor Warehouse.
Don't always trust the tyre "specialists" knowledge as they didn't warn me of the possible problem before I ordered !
