Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve emerging issue

Thought I'd make people aware of what is possibly a looming issue. I've had my X3 from new since March 2016 and it's done nearly 14000 miles of mostly very steady motorway driving. For the past couple of months I've had an intermittent error message popping up telling me of a 'drivetrain fault' The error was cleared straightaway, didn't show in the check control option and there was no problem with the engine output at all. Last Sunday the error message popped up and this time it stayed and the car went into limp mode.
I telephoned the BMW Emergency Service who told me to take it to my local dealer and I would be given a hire car whilst it was repaired. I took it to the dealer who told me straightaway after plugging my key into their system that it was a problem with the exhaust gas recirculation valve. Next day I received another call telling me the part was on back order and they could give me now estimate as to when the part would be available. I received another call last Friday telling me the part is still on back order, no date could be given for it to be fixed and that BMW would continue to pay for the hire car I was given. I was told that the part has had to be redesigned and that they currently have three vehicles in all with the same problem, 2 are 16 plate and one is a 64 plate. In the meantime I've now been without my 11 month old car for a week and there is no prospect of it being fixed.

Not just mine then!! EGR fault and no sign of it being fixed!

I am glad I found this as I suspected there is a known fault! My car too went in on Tues for a service and for them to look into the Drivetrain fault. They wouldn't release the car back to us saying there was a fault with the EGR and that the part would be ordered in. Although they have provided a hire car they are unable to give any indication of how long this will take saying it is "on backorder". They have advised they have no idea how long it could be - it could be weeks and they can see that a different EGR valve won't arrive until May!! They said all the BMW garages that ask for these are just placed in a queue and they only make a few - I questioned this as it sounded like I was being fobbed off and asked if it was a known fault but they quickly said not. After reading this original post I suspect these are happening quite a lot - hence the delay in getting them out I drive a 65 plate X3 with c 14k on the clock

I'm on that waiting list too

I have just had exactly the same problem on my X3 registered in December 2015 that I've owned for less than 6 weeks. The drivetrain warning light came on a few times, cleared with no loss of power or any other symptoms and has continued to do it about once a day. I took it to my local BMW dealer who said it was the EGR valve and he'd find out when they could get the part. He phoned the following day and told me there was no date, that BMW only release a few valves at a time and there are already a lot of people waiting. Not what anyone wants to hear. To be fair to them though, they did eventually sort me out with another X3 courtesy car, but I have no idea when mine's coming back. They said it could be over a month, but when I asked if it would be a year they said no.....they hoped! But I think we're in for a long wait, it'll be interesting to see how long other people have waited.

    And another one!

I have been waiting for my car for nearly two weeks now. I have just rang the dealership for an update and they said the part is still on back order with no idea when it will arrive. Mine is also a 2016 X3. Started with the drivetrain error message so it was booked to go in to the dealership but then the engine just died whilst I was driving and left me in a precarious spot on a junction! Got it started again but BMW recovery said it had to go in as they could not have me driving around in it and, from what I am learning on the internet, that could cause further damage to the vehicle. The dealership has told me this morning that they have lots of unhappy customers and are getting cars in everyday with the same fault. They are struggling with where to store all the cars awaiting this part - and are no doubt running up a huge bill with the hire company providing the courtesy cars! They have said this will affect other makes as well - as BMW don't manufacture the part and buy it in from a company that supplies Mercedes, etc. I think we may have a long wait :-(

I have been told today that if I have my car remapped it will delete the problem. The EGR valve is apparently fitted so the car passes government and EU laws (I am guessing to keep emissions down - which I am all for) but over time the valve becomes clogged with carbon deposits and affects the efficiency of the engine resulting in this problem, less mpg and a reduction of the cars performance - i.e. not as responsive - which I have found. I am not on familiar territory here and am only repeating what I have been told but if anyone has any views or more information on this, I'd be interested to hear and learn more. I am guessing a remap would possibly invalidate the warranty tho?

Same problem diagnosed today. I have a hire car. Told egr is on back order till mid May. 30 min to replace and there will be a software update. Two different people advised a large number with problem. Drivetrain warning became regular.

Me too. Took mine last week after drivetrain fault became regular and car went into limp mode. Dealer has no idea when part will be in but they have given me a hire car.

I got mine back after a fortnight - bit suspicious that they have only cleaned the valve and not replaced it :-/ Turns out it needs to go back now anyway as they did the isofix upgrade at the same time and when they were welding/soldering in the back of the car, they burnt all the rear carpets and damaged the trim! :-[
