    Question BFI - Ask FAL...

I'm opening up this thread to anybody that may have questions, that they think i can answer. I'm in the process of curtailing my forum habits and have decided to make BFI my new UK-based BMW forum home (this leaves me with one American BMW forum and a private global diagnostic software forum, which i am lucky enough to have been asked to moderate). I'm now going to push-on and try to help the BFI electrics and diagnostics sections, to become the envy of many a BMW forum...

I guess it could be a risk starting a thread like this, as some people may incorrectly assume that it's an egotistical affair or a "willy-waving competition" - it's neither. I get a lot of eMails and Skype requests from people, looking for help with a wide variety of problems. I thought it might be a nice idea to have these questions and answers posted openly, which may help other members in the future.

    • So what sort of questions can you answer? Well, it's probably a waste of time to ask me questions about tyres sizes or trim colours, because i probably won't know the answer. It's best to carry on asking questions like that in the main forum. I can however, try to answer your questions about diagnostic software, diagnostic hardware and it's real-world effectiveness. Questions ranging from diagnostics to emergency flash-programming, from FSC to IBAN, from L-Line to HFSZ, from ZCS to FA/VO, from EBF to ODX... ...and anything in-between. Basically, anything that relates to software, hardware or implementation.
    • ...and, anything else? Well, from time to time i will be adding various bits of software or documentation to this thread - little treats.

Here's some examples of the things i won't do...
    • Generate anything for ISPI.
    • Generate anything for E-Sys.
    • Generate keys or codes for any security related modules on any BMW, MINI or Rolls Royce vehicles. No SOPT, no ISN, no EWS-SK, nothing.
    • Give you all my "stuff"... ...this one seems to get asked a lot! I've made mistakes with people in the past, helping them fix real problems, then the next thing you know, they've opened-up a little part-time business and are passing themselves off as "Super Coding Specialist" or something equally ridiculous.
    • Sell you all my "stuff"... ...this one is also popular. I work for a prestigious motor manufacturer and the BMW software is just a long-running and addictive hobby, although it has grown into a small monster and taken on a life of it's own. Therefore i have no need or desire to sell you anything. I know that on other forums, they have diagnostics sections sponsored by people selling old INPA, Ediabas and DIS packages - along with home-brew cable packages and god-knows what else. Personally, i wish to stay well clear of these people as i find it quite distasteful. If you need a certain piece of software or a file(s), and as long as releasing it to you does not conflict with anything else, i am happy to share.

Right let's get this show on the road, before i turn into Claire Rayner...

    Kind Regards,
    FAL

(P.S. Maybe a Mod would be kind enough to sticky this? )

Here is a quick INPA modification i did last night, for the E36 owners here on BFI. I've updated the script files and added additional ones. They are mostly English Metric, although there are now a couple of German-only Metric variants - unfortunately, i don't have the time to sit and translate them, as i can't really justify it on a 20+ year old car. It also now supports English Metric fault codes (a common fault/problem i was reading somewhere last night... ?) and has a slightly different script selection menu.

Note: I'm working off some very old Ediabas and BEST documentation (which can sometimes be wrong), plus i don't normally work on the older chassis - therefore i would ask anyone who's familiar with the E36 to have a look. If you spot any errors or omissions, please let me know.

    Chassis Covered
    E36, E36.5, E36.7 and E36.8

    Installation
If you use an old version of INPA, with the E36 on the main screen:
    1. Copy E36.ENG to .../INPA/CFGDAT
    2. Copy INPALOAD.EXE to .../INPA/BIN
    3. Copy the contents of the SGDAT folder into .../INPA/SGDAT
    4. Copy the contents of the ECU folder into .../EDIABAS/ECU

If you use a newer version of INPA, with the E36 within the Old Models section:
    1. Copy BMW_ALT.ENG to .../INPA/CFGDAT
    2. Copy INPALOAD.EXE to .../INPA/BIN
    3. Copy the contents of the SGDAT folder into .../INPA/SGDAT
    4. Copy the contents of the ECU folder into .../EDIABAS/ECU

Yes, no problem. The ability to enable/disable functions, depends on the software level of the ECUs on the car, so i can’t say for certain that we will be able to enable everything - however, i can’t foresee any problems.

Right, even after today’s problems, i will get your cars encoded with the functions that you want. Theirs four ways that i can do this for you:

    1. I can come to you (i think that Jim is in Rutland, not far from me).
    2. I can meet you at another event.
    3. I can do it over the internet.
    4. I can show you how to do it.

Let me know what you think or drop me a PM.

I'm also gonna give this a go myself, after looking at some tutorials of NCS it doesn't seem as bad as I first thought.

Only question I have is do you have a translated list of what each option is ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris
