    320 E46 Fault Codes

Hi, I recently purchased a 2008 320 E46 with 121k on the clock. Had a couple of errors with wiring in the boot and replacing bulbs which I fixed easily. It does have the DSC light showing which I am aware can be pricey to get resolved but less of a worry. Had the car serviced straight after purchasing it and within 500 miles the following fault codes were showing after the engine management light came on the other day. Would like to understand what the collection of them mean since they weren't showing before now:

    416F Diesel Electronics
    4A4E Cylinder 3 Glow Plug
    480A Particulate Filter System
3FF1 Air Mass Flow System Sensor
    4530 Charge Air Pressure Control

Any ideas as to route cause would be helpful - I do have a a warranty from VGS, not sure how good that is but it is for 6 months from purchase. Thanks!

I am assuming this is an N47 2.0L turbodiesel same as mine. Don't stress over the five faults listed. It could be only one of the five. I had six totally unrelated faults showing and was told it was the turbo. Replaced that,$1500, no difference. Then started hearing a clacking noise coming coming from underneath the car on shutdown. That gave them the clue. It's an X Drive which have an electric clutch to bring in the 4X4. The motor drives a brass worm gear which drives a plastic actuating gear which strips just in one spot. The workshop's answer, replace the whole assembly, $2500.All lights off in one fault. Two weeks later I found aftermarket replacement gears for $25 on EBay. Lesson, never trust workshops, especially with what oil they put in your car because this engine has problems with timing chains. If they break this can destroy your engine. They put them at the back so you have to remove the engine to work on them. You'll need to sell the car to pay the bill. Use ONLY BMW LL-04 rated oil with low SAPS rating, (Low deposits). Look them up on your preferred oil company recommendations and specifications and use only the best you can find. & keep the oil level up on the MAX.
I use Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP. Not just Mobil 1 5W-30 which is for petrol engines and is BMW LL-01 rated. This will not keep your diesel clean enough. Hence the particulate filter problem unless you have a faulty sensor. You can get treatments to put through the exhaust filters to clean them up. I also use a
friction modifier to help with chain wear and change oil & filter at 20K, not 30K. You could eat your lunch on the inside of my diesel valve cover & the inside of the tailpipe extension is still shiny at 150K,so check yours & take 6L of your own oil to your service. If you clean inside your sensors with spray contact cleaner this may help your other issues but I would take the car straight back to the dealer for a start and always use a specialist euro workshop that understand your problems. Also ASK for replaced parts back BEFORE any work is started not after.
