    INPA Disaster!

    Hi,

Thought I would update you on my INPA progress (Or lack of it!)
If you want a laugh carry on reading this.

Bought the lead and soldered the required pins.
Installed the software last night and all seemed ok.
Decided to use an old xp laptop my in laws gave me at the weekend.
Chickened out on using my Windows 7 laptop, glad I did.

Crept out into the cold this evening to have a go.........

Opened up the INPA software and it came up with a few error messages when I tried selecting my engine type.

Quit out of the software and thought maybe starting the engine would help.

Laptop went dead when I turned on the engine and I can't resurrect it

The laptop only ran with the charger plugged in but the charging light does not even come on now.

Think the power supply is ok as you can hear it buzz when you plug it in to the rear of the laptop. Have checked the fuse.

Well just glad I didn't use my main laptop!

Any suggestions to what may have happened would be a appreciated but I reckon the laptop is fried. Wouldn't have thought a surge via the car would have killed it
but I'm not sure what else could have happened. Maybe just a coincidence that it decide to die when I turned on the car engine?

    Musn't grumble

Yeah as Lee says - I very much doubt something plugged into USB would be able to screw the laptop.

Can you hear the drive clicking? I guess its not POSTing when you plug it in?

Either soldered wrong or when cranked tried to draw power form laptop down the ignition live at a guess.

If it was mine I would look at laptop power supply, it will be marked with a symbol indicating the voltage output and which terminal is live and which is earth, then test with a cheap voltmeter to se if the output is still right.

I might also take out the battery and any ejectable drives and if the power supply checked out OK listen for the fan when pressing power button

After that it's onto minimum config and a partial strip down.

But it's not mine so have fun.

Here's one I fell down stairs and sat on earlier

The +5V or whatever it is still comes off the internal voltage regulation so it could

However, the big one would be test power supply and see if you get the charging / mains power light on when that is plugged in that is a start, if not even that happens with a good oiwer supply you are in trouble because that power light isn't even hooked into the POST or any of the systems that come on on a post test. No light, failed at first hurdle. Do not pass go do not collect 200..............

Right the Laptop appears to be working again now! Must just have been a coincidence, the laptop is ancient!

Opened up the software again. Selected E46 and my engine M54 but when I do this it comes up with a mismatch error?

When using daily doggys guide I'm not sure if this part is correct on my computer:

double check that C:\EDIABAS\BIN has been added to the path string in enviromental variables (right click my computer/properties/advanced/enviromental variables and select path in the list, click edit check its there and exit without changing anything)

    mine reads c:\program files\ediabas\bin;c:\ediabas\bin

When I first installed the software I asked it to install it in my program files. The last part of the software install did not work. I then uninstalled the software and installed it in my c drive and all was well. I think this may be why my mine reads differently?

As you can probably see this is my first attempt in using diagnostics! Where would be the best place to start to try and learn how to use the software I have now installed. Would prefer reading up on the stuff than pestering people with stupid questions!

    Cheers

there are no instructions for inpa ya have to wing it just dont reset/recalibrate anything with the car running (ign pos 2 only), and dont fuck about with anything that sez EWS on it...

stay in engine diags till ya find ya feet a bit...

the error warning box" versions do not match malfunction may occur" is normal it does that on all versions of INPA just ignore it...
