Hi folks, forgive me if this topic has been covered elsewhere. I am a newbie here and I haven't found it yet.
My question is this; is the E39 generally more reliable than the E60 as seems to be the case judging from
my pre-purchase research? Perhaps more problems have arisen as the cars have used more complicated technology.
I have also read elsewhere about the inferior BMW build quality from the E60 on and which has only improved in recent years.
I may be about to purchase a 1999 E39 530d Auto M Sport Tourer on 117k miles with fully documented history rather than any equivalent and much newer E61. This would be my first (very) old Beemer and I would be happier gambling £2k rather than 4,5 or 6 although I do expect to have to spend some dosh on it from time to time.
I suppose I am looking for some reassurance before I plunge into the unknown away from the ridiculous car finance repayment treadmill. I have given in to the realisation that over the years I have always enjoyed owning the older, cheaper cars that were all I could afford at the time. My pride and joy was a ten year old 1986 Porsche 944 bought for £6k which I was finally separated from when I was facing some hefty maintainance costs.
