Had same problem. As your 8 button has check you are 5 wires away from being able to fit an 18 button OBC

(If you can live with having all your current and the fuel / range ghidden functions but no gong or stalk or outside temp thhough you could add those after)

you can add an 18 button by just moving 2 pins from your black plug to the white plug that you make sure to get with the 18 Button and you will have everything you have now.

Add 5 more wires and you have the fuel functions. At that point you are only short of the external temp sensor, the indicator stalk if you want to scroll through without reaching and the gong for bong sounds

To go from 8 button with check control you only have to move 2 wires to make it power up and give you more or less what you had before, but somewhat prettier.

However, anything that requires fuel consumption or distance / speed info will not work.

When you turn the power on the exterior temp will flash as -37.5 degrees for a few seconds and go out.

You will not have the gong.

You can set the limit but it will not read the road speed.

Code will not work without an extra wire.

    Range will read "---"

Comsumption might read 99.9 unless you reset it

    You get the idea.

    Two pics of scrambled MID

The black connector is one of two types, the one that came with the OBC had a little catch to release to let the actual block with the wires slide out.

    And here it is out.........

The one on the car had a bit that slid down before it coule slide out..........
(FYI recently stripped a Vectra B and found one of these black connectors on a wire zip tied to the bulk head above the glovebox. Useless info unless you are missing the white one for the OBC - no warranty implied given - though I suppose you could always see if a black E36 one does)

    And done

Now you just need to decide if you need:
To change indicator stalk for one to scroll through OBC - seems expensive for the benefit.
    Gong
    Temp sensor
    Code
About three or is it two wires up into the instrument cluster connectors........

I validated the wiring positions in the black plug from my 8 button against the cutoffs coming with the 18 button (I have lost the notes) but suffice it to say that everything lined up with the OBC having more.

Once the black plug is out of its cover push on the side of the silver connector for the pins to remove and pull gently on the wire. They will slide out.

I then repositioned two as shown HERE (repositioned not T'd into) to obtain the result above.
Currently my white connector only has two wires in. The ones removed from 17 and 18 in the black connector. I carefully removed the rest and will use them as I add the other gadgets.

No warranty of any kind implied or given. This is what I have done but I am not recommending it in any way and accept no resposibility ofr anyone attempting to follow what I have done.

    And the other five wires

I upgraded a 1994 325 from 8 Button to OBC by moving two wires from the black plug across and adding 5 more.

    I moved:
    X1070 Pin 17 to X1071 Pin 13
    X1070 Pin 18 to X1071 Pin 8

That gave basic power and all the original 8 button functions and was my first stage.

    Second Stage I added:
    X1070 Pin 13 to X17 Pin2
X1071 Pin 9 to X17 Pin 10 (added metal pin at X17 end)

    X1071 Pin 5 to X16 Pin 12
    X1071 Pin 6 to X16 Pin 21
    X1071 Pin 7 to x16 Pin 11

Did you have to add a pin into one of the dashboard connectors? If so which one?

Only thing I can think is read a few guides on here in my research before doing I think I cam across a thread mentioning older cars having diffrerent wiring.......
