What is so good about SMG

I'm in for a car change, there is nothing BMW I want apart from a E46 M3 CSL, but they have there problems as I'd put it, they dont have Nav, no armrest and the biggest draw back is they are SMG.

I dont think I could live with SMG, is ment to change quicker but I feel lost without a clutch pedal to use.

People who have SMG, would you say it is good, better or worse than a manual ?

Is it something I would have to live with and learn to love it or hate it ?

I won't say too much as I only had poor man's SSG in my Clubsport, but I think it's something you should certainly try. It's great fun to use and Christ does it shift quickly.

To be honest mate, you don't seem to keep cars for long, so even if you didn't ultimately like it you're not stuck with it forever

Plus: what a car to say you've owned (more cache than the E30 IMO).

However, cue about 10 posts dismissing SMG because it's unreliable and expensive to fix (BUY A FUCKING FOCUS THEN!!!).

Might just have to get a CSL, other choices are RS4 or 997 C2S, dont think I could live with buying a GT3 and running it if something went wrong with it it'd cost big bucks to fix, could be a nightmare.
Got to find a SMG to try out to see if I could get used to it.
It cant be as bad as a Automatic car to drive can it ???

Hi Mark I have only been in one with smgII and after that short trip I made the decision that when I get my M3 early next year it will be a smg one and I never thought I would ever say that

until you have had one fail on you you dont know how bad it pisses you off( ive had two fail now converted to manual)
plumb there very good when giving it the beans
but crap when your in a car park
and dont even think about driving in the snow fucking useless
when you look at one it needs to not have been started for at least 5 hours
open the door get in fast and turn the key if it does not turn over it means the start of pump failure
as the ecu will not let it start until the system has pressurised

    christ mark not again

fast beetle get the c2s as its all the car most porsche owners will ever need

rs4 a boss at work had one and he said it was f....... quick but so bland to drive(he owns about 7 cars inc 3 bmws inc a z4m and remapped 335 d estate

smg is bloody quick and light years ahead of the old autos of old and i was very impressed and felt the manual felt inadequate afterwards with the e46 m3.

e46 m3 csl looks the part but so overpriced its stupid so that leaves

e60 m5-15k buys a nice one and 500 bhp straight out the box

I had a £400 bill with SSG and that was it repair wise in 2 years of ownership - I consider that pretty good going, especially factoring in how much these cars cost new. Never expect it to be cheap to fix.

    CSL's faster than an E92 M3, a 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo.

As for the SMG question, I quite like it on the few cars I've driven with it. Never actually owned one though so can't comment on the reliability or day to day stuff.

Never driven with it myself, but I would like a car with SMG/SSG on at some point. When looking for my 330, I was looking for a car with SSG, but the manual one I bought stood out more than the SSG one's on offer.

    I say go for it

After owning a few SMG's Mark I can report once you've got used to them, which doesn't take long at all, they are excellent.
I'm talking about E46 SMG's and not the SMG 1 on the E36 which is absolutely diabolical- think automatic gearbox that is as useful as a pissed sea side donkey and you get the idea. They put the SMG in the CSL I think for good reason. They feel a lot more purposeful and much easier to drive the car quickly. I'd only get a CSL as a second car personally as to live with day in day out they are a bit raw and if it's a second car you don't need things like an arm rest and Nav.

"Stance" (n): Term used to describe a car so low to the ground it scrapes, very easy to accomplish requiring no imagination or skill
