    E36 323i

    What are these engines like(its a 96)?

Are they worth messing about with or crap compared to the 325 and 328?
I assume its still the M52 block?

    Cheers gang

Yes, M52 block. 2.5l. Only difference between this engine and the 2.8, is the 2.8 is stroked.

You can do the M50 manifold conversion, which apparently brings them upto the stock power of the 325 and 328.

323i is ok, very little between them and a 325, about 20bhp if correct and Gus's touring when i followed it in my M5 showed a good turn off speed Ben

Thanks chaps, might be worth looking at then.
I take it a 96 will have that shitty block lining(can't remember the name now)

Ben id be careful with that motor as its likely still to have the nikasil block

My 97 323 touring ended up with next to no compression mate and it was a nightmare

Ended up with the e34 as a stop gap tho so not all bad, that was 2 years ago

    Nikasil.

And it's not always the case, it could've been replaced with a steel lined engine at some point in its life. Best thing to do is go have a look at it, and if it's is Nikasil lined, compression test it. Nikasil lined engines can still be good ones.

My 328i was a nikasil block and it was very good.
I take it compression test is the only way to tell if its fucked or not?
Anyone know what the limits are?
