    E46 m3

Are E46 M3s a victim of their own sucsess, great cars but getting too cheap, now being bought by people who cant afford to run them/service them, they're more interested in sticking chavy mods on rather than giving it a desent set of tyre.

The E36 M3 went through this, but it seems to have passed and has moved to the E46 M3.

I think you need to shop around. I looked at 3 Carbon Black coupes.

First had good interior and wheels, looked OK till you realised it had had a hit of paint down both sides, boot lid didn't quite fit and on inspection I decided the right hand rear quarter was about 1/2" low. Sure enough ripple in boot floor and a couple of what I would take to be hammer marks inside the rear pane. Did have nice diamond cut wheels. 99K miles private seller, but didn't remember exactly when he got it.......

Second was a world better but interior dirty interior, silly air filter, basic monocoque was straight but front bumper a little rippled between the lights, light lenses a little crazed. Then I noticed a crack in the aircon fan and on investigation noticed an oil cooler shaped like a banana. Refurbished wheels 130k miles forecourt

Third car, leather good, the only one that was clean and tidy inside and out and shining its bum off. Paint was right, has age related scratches and chips, panel fits good 12 months MOT, 6 months tax, history 6" think HPI clear, refurbished wheels in silver, Cruise CD head unit, 6 disk changer, driver aid pack Xenons etc. 75K miles

Bought last one for 17% less than it was up for and the same price I was looking to spend that the other cars were up for. It does have a couple of things that need sorting but nothing pressing and nothing I can't do if I need to or decide to.

The trouble is that the good ones can't be offered for too much more than the dross, because if you are asking 2K more than every other car for sale no one will come to look.

^^^ this. A thousand times this.

We started 'discussing' this in your thread the other day and I won't continue to air my views on them, but it is a massive shame because it brings them all down.

I agree on the E36 thing too - I see less than half the number of them as I do E46 M3's and almost without exception they're clean and standard, which is always a good thing.

I think as cars age and become classis there is a time when they are unappreciated where a lot of good ones get ruined. it's easy to be elitist about it but no need to be.

As I have pointed out in the Manta owners club many times when people go on about nasty plates being welded on for MOT etc, the reality is below...........................

The most important thing a car can do is exist, because it needs to last through that neglected stage to still be around when it is appreciated as a classic to be a "barn find" or restored.

Every botch repair that keeps a car out of the crusher so it is available to be saved later is fine by me. And if you want to see it another way, the sheds are rolling spares just waiting to be available after a harsh MOT and when kept in the form of a car they are around many years after scrap yards would have crushed all those good parts.
