BMW e60-PETROL VS DIESEL CAR TAX PRICES

Looking through ebay and autotrader last night and you can pick a half decent e60 525/530 petrol for around 5-7k with half decent spec and thought mmmmmm then happen to check the tax band for them and nearly had a fit over the tax bands for them

    example

    BMW 5 SERIES 530I SE 4DR AUTO 3.0 2003

Select a search : Directgov - Car fuel data, CO2 and vehicle tax tools

jesus 460 quid a year and thats the same as m5 or m3 and even the 525 is in that bracket and the 520 -270 quid but i notice the diesels are more like a decent figure as a nice 530d -250 a year

guess what i will be looking for if i get an e60 then

I'm guessing you would be paying 205 already, in which case 460 is 255 more that's 4.90 a week to drive the car yoiu want, you can't get 3 1/2 litres of fuel for that, plus if the cars are a bit cheaper for the dearer tax it offsets the cost.

Andy you'll be very happy to know that cars pre March 2006 are capped at 270 per year.

This means even a Lamborghini pre 2006 will still be 270.

Can't paste the link (as I'm on my phone) but the dvla table has it written on the small print under the table.

My tax is capped at 270.

The cost of vehicle tax for cars, motorcycles, light goods vehicles and trade licences : Directgov - Motoring

See band K on table in above link^

"* Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006"

not the full picture and the blinded by the cheaper tax and mpg thing IMO, the petrol cost more to tax but on the other hand the more expensive price of the diesel car to buy combined with the potential dearer maintenance costs can far outweigh its cheaper yearly tax...

ive bin running my 330 for nearly 10 years now yeah its shitter on mpg but i have spent next to fook all over the past 10 years on maintenance and fixing it and petrol is chepaer per gallon.

1 goosed turbo on a diesel is 5 times more than ive spent in 10 years on my engine in parts or repairs...
