    Predicament??????????????????????????????

    Warranty Direct

Has anybody used this company and had to claim?

    My story goes like this

I have had my BMW for over a year now, i bought it with 50,000 miles on its E60 540i m sport 4l V8.
Its a great car looks amazing and runs even better but over last 8 or 9 months the car has started burning oil at quite a considerable rate seen as its only used prob 3 days of the week max.I have been getting quite a lot of smoke out of the exhaust, this only happens when say when you are sat in abit of traffic at idle for a few mins, then when you put your foot down you get a cloud of very light blue/grey smoke i presume it is light because its new oil and it isnt getting chance to get dirty. So i have been to 4 ind bmw specialists 1 garage somebody who i know and have spoke to my main BMW dealer in Manchester.
So my mate with his garage says its a breather pipe thats blocked,he has done one before on a 540i, its a pipe on the back of the crank case.....ok but then i went to BMW main dealer for the partthere blow up diagram shows there isnt one listed for my car it only has one on the front of the engine listed as crank case breather, so bought it anyway for 30 fitted in two mins easy, not solved the problem.
Speak to my mate who works at main BMW dealer in Manchester he speaks to head mtec machanic he says valve stem seals which is what one of the ind BMW places said. he said get it to main BMW dealer for diagnosis at cost of 130. not done that yet.Main dealer quote my mate thinks is around 3000 to 3500 for valve stem seals to be done.
So another ind BMW specialist now,i tell him my problems and all i have been told, and when i mention valve stem seals he says "naaaaa i havnt done them since the late 90s and they where on E30 and the odd E36 i wouldnt think its that" Little bit of hope comes my way maybe im not going to be 3k lighter, but then continues to say not a clue i would get it to your main dealer. Great!
So then the last ind BMW specialist i took it to who was a great bloke looked at it on a sat but couldnt find anything out about this engine because nobody was on parts at main dealer. So he thinks its a breating issue not valve stem seals, he said it would smoke on start up if they had gone as the oil runs past the seals when the car is off so when its started it gets burnt and out through the exhaust system which it dont, he also said the engine in my car is a newer engine and it dosnt have this breather on the back of the crank case like my mate said was on the one he did as it was a older model E60 he said the rocker covers are differant colour silver or black i cant remember, this would also explain the blow up diagram at the main BMW dealer parts the only breather was at the front and nothing at the back of the crank case for my chassie number. He also said what makes him think its a breather problem is the engine s getting no air, if you pull the dipstic out when running the is so much naggative crankcase preasure it whissles when you take the dipstick out and if you put your finger over the hole it wants to suck it in. I know german V8s do run a little bit of naggative crankcase preasue but not that much that it whistles when you take the dipstick out. So i havnt got back in touch with this guy yet to see if he can find anything else out.

So now you know everything thats happened and im no further on in finding out im thinking just take it to the main BMW dealer and get it sorted, but i had an idea instead of paying 3500 to fix it should i go for one of these warranty things, i have had a quote for 500 the guy on the phone said everything is covered from day 1, so i asked if he could send out paperwork before i say yes to it as these companys have a history of trying to get out of paying. so i got all the paperwork the other day........what a joke there's masses of it and reading it is a trauma in itself, i havn't got a clue if im covered. So what do you think i should do? And has anybody used this company before?

Oh and forgot to mention the car still runs a dreamnot sloppy in any shape or form you can stand a pound coin on the engine with it running.Theres a test for ya.Also no warning lights or anything.

weepy head gasket maybe? valve stem seals would smoke on cold starts, It does sound more like a breather issue though,do these engines have a oil seperator of any sort?
Have you had the spark plugs out to see if one in particular is oily?
Cant help with the warranty side of things.

Sounds like you have a pre-existing issue. I would not expect it to be covered on that basis alone if you buy a warranty after the fact.

Valve stem seals startup smoke, piston rings constant smoke.

Dipsticks and oil filler caps you usually breath out not suck in so sounds like breather issue

Check your oil level. Too full wil have a car drinking it

+1 on that, you have to take your car to a crappy garage as they have recommended garages which charge about 20.00 an hour labour that are shit

I only know of one person that had any joy with WD, and TBH I think that he was kinda lucky... If it were me, I would take the car to get a proper diagnosis from someone who is properly trained and competent. There are many tests that can be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of the problem. Even a decent 2nd hand engine with a lengthy warranty wouldn't cost the sort of money that you are talking about.

Obviously I wouldn't tell them about the issue before I took the warranty out with them I would say it happened a month down the line. It's all about the little guy having the big guy over surely.

You'll have a period of at least 1 months cover where you can't claim (that's even the case with the BMW warranty I have - if I were ever to let it lapse and then re-take it out).

And then... you could bet your last pound that the first thing WD will do when you make a claim 6 weeks after the policy started is prove that it was a pre-existing problem. And I don't mean 'prove' as in conclusively, I mean introduce enough doubt as to be able to wriggle out of paying.

Time to foot the bill yourself I'm afraid. It sucks, but then I'd not be surprised at that sort of bill for a serious failure on a big BMW 8. Next time take out the BMW warranty when you buy - it's the only one worth having. WD are, to be blunt, c*nts. I'd be surprised if whoever recommended them to you isn't on their books in some way

    IIRC, isn't there a bore wear issue on the 4.4 V8's ?

All the symptoms you describe point to that.
