I’m starting to look at M3s now and thought it would be a good idea to open the debate about which gear box to go for up. Now I had always thought it would have to be a “proper” manual for me, but having given it some proper thought and watched a few videos of how to use the SMG it seems like a bloody good system.
Now I know the pump is a weak point – I think I could get it replaced for £700/£800 if it were to go. @Plumb said not so long ago “knock a grand off if it’s SMG and knock a grand off if it’s silver” that isn’t quite true but I agree the SMG cars are significantly cheaper, probably about the same as replacing a pump would be. So that being the case there isn’t much of a financial argument either way…
I’m interested in hearing from anyone who has lived with an SMG not people who have never driven them and just jump on the bandwagon. I enjoy the control a manual gives me, but as I see it an SMG is a manual just instead of pulling a lever you use a paddle – I could enjoy either.. What’s the auto mode like any good? This would be a nice extra to have and is a plus for the SMG over the manual.
Finally how badly are they made , sure you get the horror stories but I’m sure there are plenty of SMG cars out there working problem free. Is there a certain life span on the pump before it goes bang?
Let the SMG bashing commence
