Hi there & hope someone can advise...

    Hi there everyone.

I hope this forum is as friendly as the BMW GS'ers motorbike one! I've registered because I've got a bit of a problem.

Apart from a GS, I have an E61 5 series 3.0 diesel estate that I've had now for a couple of years. Unfortunately, somehow the rear boot space underneath the spare wheel has filled with water (how I have no idea?) and it has fused the electrics, buggering up the ECU's and wiring loom and causing some fire damage (not much).

Is this a terminal problem as the garage seem to think its a write off. Given the fact that the car is 9 years old, has done 140k and can't be worth more than 5k, is it worth repairing?

If not, can someone recommend where I might get another one?

    best

    Charlie

I seem to recall an article about the rear lights leaking on the E61, that's probably where the water has come in from - not that helps much with the repair. I can only suggest that you contact an independent BMW specialist to see if they can help to shave some corners off the cost of repair and keep the car on the road somehow.

the rear leak on e61`s is caused by clogged up rear drain pipes from sunroof/panoramic roof. I assume you have one of those and its very common issue. the culprit are two "nothing for" endings on those drain pipes. drain pipes they can be pulled out through inside hatches on the sides of the boot space. just remove the end bits of them and stick the pipes back where they come from. you can also do a bit more, in the wheel space there are 4 drain holes glued in with this asphalty material, so just pop the holes in those. as for repairs, if you can source the modules online (ebay perhaps) you could be fine, some of em needs coding. there also been loads of reports that taking out the modules and drying em out helped in few cases.
further you can change panorama roof seal (20) and relocate all the electric modules to empty space on the left side in the vehicle boot behind the trim - this is common practice on those.
Where is the rain gutter located in the panorama roof? - Page 3 - 5Series.net - Forums

Thanks to all above, esp to mjojom. Funnily enough the car doesn't have a sun roof, but the culprit is now suspected as being the rear window seals OR the wife who has a habit of leaving doors and tailgates open. Given the amount of rain we've had this year, that could be a prime candidate! I will see what can be done with scavenging off a wrecked E61 and re-programming if that's possible.

BMW do repair kits for the wiring, but if the ECU's are knackered then that will be expensive!
