Wink E36Meerkat's "other money draining project"

Soo while I wait for a BMW that I have to have to arise from some place in Canada, thought I'd stick up this little side project in the open forum.

I gotta mod something while I wait

My Daily Driver while in Canada A 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. (yes... I know it looks like a shark )

My Mod list so far (I have to keep reminding myself that this is my Daily... and not a weekend toy, trust me... it's not easy)

    - 20" Dual Row light Bar
    - Hidden Rocker Switch with custom panel
    - HID's to replace the crappy yellow bulbs
    - Ether spot off road lights for fogs of HID's (to be decided)
    - Plastic dip two of the front grill surrounds in red (represented on the Dakar Jeep Cherokee)
    - Set of Summer wheels (to be decided)

"Annnnd that's about it really..." yet I've said that many many times before

So.. what currently is in the Cherokee is a lot.

No need to upgrade the speaker system, it came with 9 alpine speaker surround sound that shakes the whole SUV.
It has adaptive cruise control, lane detection and it bloody parks its self. All three features frankly freak me out
    3D Navigation
8.4" Touch Screen with Satellite radio, iPod hook up, USB (x2) Hook up and SD Card Hook up as well as an actual plug to plug phones or laptops in.
Parking sensors friggin everywhere and a back up camera with adaptive lines showing where your wheels are gonna end up. (the lines move with the steering wheel )
It also has heated & vented front seats (the venting makes it feel like you've p*ssed your pants) and a heat steering wheel along with remote start. (A god send up here in Canada for the lazy type - aka me )

All of this fancy stuff blows my mind coming from a 1996 E35 318iS lol This is my first vehicle since selling the E36. Working for a Dealership does have it's perks

In my next post I'll update with what's been done so far

(to the mods - hope it's ok that I am posting this here. It can be taken down if need be. I'll understand, I just gotta mod something )

Some cheeky bugger left a present for me in the car park...

So I started off with the 20" light bar, the cheapest mod.

Which will sit behind the honey comb grill.

    Sat roughly in place

The plan is to drill and cut into nothing on the vehicle. That way when it comes time to trade it in, I can return it to stock.
So a set of brackets are made to attach to the mounting points for the two radiators. (the second radiator is part of the tow package)

    The left side bracket

    The right side Bracket

    Both Brackets

The brackets were cleaned up and given a nice coat of black All ready for the next stage of making the switch bracket and wiring the bar into the vehicle.

Now it's time to make the switch rocker switch panel

The rocker switch (I had to get it from the states, none in canada :( )

Started off by getting an acrylic sheet, measured out the compartment and started cutting away

Got a little carried away and broke the first attempt...

Nothing says "Project" more than blood

Painted it up with some plastic paint and fitted the rocker switch surround.

I think I'll re make the switch panel, it doesn't fit exactly how'd I'd like it to fit.

Put industrial velcro on as when it's time to return to stock it's easily removed.

The brackets, bent by using a blow torch and the end of a table

And this is how it'll work

All ready for the install and wiring in.

Great attention to detail with the switch & surround looking OEM

Will you be legal to drive with the light bar illuminated?

A rocker switch is literally a switch the rocks back and forth. It has the ability to light up two different colours. So when my lights come on (headlights) a night, the switch illuminates with the rest of the dials on the dash. It lights up white on the bottom half when off and then when on it lights up the graphic at the top in blue.

They have tons of graphics on them, all in relation to what you want the switch to symbolize. I got it from this site in the states. It's actually pretty cool. Some of the switch graphics will make you laugh.

Thanks I'm trying to keep things hidden and "simple"... the simple is the hard bit LOL

They actually aren't legal to have on any vehicle at all unless it's primally used off road. However, being the Grande Prairie is so far north, it gets friggin dark out here once you've left the city limits. So as long as you aren't driving with the light bars on against other traffic, the police turned a blind eye. Every truck and most SUV's (esp jeep wranglers) have them on.

I know, this SUV is like marmite. You ether love it or hate it.

I was also looking at the Renegade or the Cherokee. Couldn't get a truck yet due to my immigration status in Canada. If you ask for to much on the car loan then the banks starting asking for more info annnnd then I'd have to put 25% of the vehicles total worth. So it kept me with in a certain budget. Got it at 0% interest though

How ever, after driving this thing... WOW! It totally makes sense why it won Four Wheeler of the year. It may look like the back end of a bus but it handles amazing in the winter and off road. It has the ability to lock the rear diff and is a true 4x4 with 4x4 Low. So, I kinda got over the looks

    No for the wiring in

once the brackets were put in, we could see it was sat a bit wonky. That will be fixed in the next post

Difficult picture to see but you can see the main wire going through a hole on the side of the plastic surround.

This was an utter **** to get the wire to here. Thankfully I have small hands and skinny arms. I reached from under the SUV up through the engine bay, got hold of the wire and managed to pull it through. Luckily there was a hole already in the fire wall that I could punch through.

The wiring going up to the pull out compartment in the dash.

Ready for the switch to be mounted in

    Neat and tidy

The switch mounted in (I'm not fully happy on how it's sitting, so my plan is remove the pull out compartment and sit the switch panel better)

    Hidden

    and not hidden lol

    And the light bar on

    At night

The light does need readjusting so it will illuminate the whole road as apposed to just in front of the vehicle.

Next post will be at night of the bar all readjusted (when ever that will be lol)

Why are the tow hooks red, and are they factory?
What engine does it have and power?
    What is your job?

I like those light bars I am going to get one for me rover when its on the road

What happened about your door did you find out who did it/get any money?
