    1992 Big ol Merc Estate

    Hi folks,

Well this is to replace the S60.

Was after something bigger like an estate but didnt fancy any of the modernish stuff so got this, a bit different and retro ish

This was an insurance write off in Feb. The PO lost heart in it after that and also has a big Merc S class thing so wanted shot.

We got this at the start of August with nearly a years Mot. Nice n cheap as well, ive gotten the 2 e34s and this for less than 1500 quid so happy enough.

1992 200TE Estate 7 seater auto, just a 2 litre 4 cylinder. 137000 with Dealer and Indy history then a wad of receipts for a few grand. Motd July 2017.

So the damage.. a bloke in a Ford Puma reversed into the PO and caused this

the dent on the bonnet actually looks worse than it is, written off for that

So the grille needed replacing but im just leaving the bonnet.

Needed a good tidy up and paint and had an oil leak.

This is the rust, nearly every one i saw advertised had rust along the top of the bumper on the wings

paints4u came good again for a great paint match

i did this mirror as well as it was just black

had an oil leak and changed the cam cover gasket, all good now

changed those front indicatore to clears as well, only 14 quid, 11 for the cam cover gasket so cheap enough for the parts, 30 odd for the grille

this is how it is for now

theres a big hole in that drivers bolster, its got the back cloth from another one slung over it

third row of seats fold up from the floor

    137000 miles

free spider thats went for a long sleep in the clock

thought itd be a 5 min job to remove the cluster like the e32s/ e34s but ive since found out its not so itll have to stay there for now haha

    engine bay

original stereo, its got some kinda card that you remove from the front, electric aerial works good tho

happy with it so far. Couple of things still to do i think tho.

When you put it in D or R theres a vibration through the car, same when you go on the throttle but not in N. I thought it was just because it was so old and just wasnt as smooth as the BMWs

but ive since found out its likely the Trans mount so ive ordered one of them and i think i can do it myself. If that doesnt work ill change the engine mounts

Seems really well built this but a couple of annoying things about it, for me anyway..

That handbrake thats a footbrake on these old things takes a bit of getting used to. The steering column has no adjustment either, i know this one was the bottom of the range but youd think it would at least have that.

All the electrics work tho including the soft close tailgate, no aircon bit its got a sunroof instead so happy enough.

Well thats it i think for now. Next instalment should be the Trans mount and gonna change the stereo soon as well.

Qualifies for Classic insurance, cheaper tax than the Volvo and slightly better fuel economy so far so well see how it goes, should be a good workhorse

    Thanks for looking guys

    Thanks mate

Its not bad underneath really, seen a lot worse. Dusting of rust on the subframes etc but the floor etc is very good

Doesnt float the boat at all this thing, makes me like the old BMWs even more

    Thanks Simon

Yeah it does feel like an old bus, cant see this lasting long tbh. Theyre just not as good as what ive read about them, built like tanks etc bla bla, dont see the big deal. Maybe its just this one right enough or maybe the 2.8s and 3 litres are much better..

This is the same mate, its too heavy for the engine. Always looking for another gear as well once your cruising..

Hi Watty, that IS a good work-horse,

Just watch out for rust behind the plastic Panels on the bottom of the doors and wings, they store all the crap and it festers! (Bit like the E46 front wing where the crud collects behind the front inner wing in front of the door and causes "car cancer" )

    Hi Bratty hope you good

Well this has moved onto its next owner allready

Was a great workhorse right enough, did a tip run and moved a freezer for someone and its great for that but..

Not our cuppa tea, couldnt get used to it and for me these old Mercs arent half as good to drive as the old BMWs.

New owner is happy with it, hes had a couple in the past.

    So thats that done

Thanks for all the feedback guys, back to the Bimmers we go!
