Just got back from Germany last night after spending 4 days there with my dad, I don't get to see him often, in fact after this trip it's been 20 days out of 7 years! He was working in Germany and took a few extra days so I flew over to see him. We are both car mad and he drives an M3 CS in the States. He has also owned various Porsches and Mercs so it would have been rude not to travel to Stuttgart to see their museums too! I arrived quite late on the Friday evening so we got started on Saturday;
He had rented a brand new 520d saloon for us as he was with 3 of this Mexican workers from Monterrey. We first went to Porsche, it was amazing! My dad has enthsemia from smoking so we had to take it slow, but everything was amazing! lots of history of the company and a rich racing background. We also had lunch in the restaurant and I had my first German beer! Very good food.
Straight after we went to the Mercedes museum. It was much bigger and had much more cars in it, however they were, to me, not as interesting. The background and history was based upon world events so it was cool to be able to see the car and the era it was used in.
We went to Munich to BMW Welt. Holy S**t!! It was amazing! The main building is a huge showroom, you have the option to pick up your brand new beemer there, you get taken to a special part of the building where your new car is parked, in full view of everyone in the building, you can get in, start it up and drive it through the building! The museum is just over the road as well as the option of a factory tour, free if your picking up a car, only 8 euros otherwise, limited availability. I went on it myself as dad's condition wouldn't allow him to. It was amazing, they show you just about everything, from the cold pressing to welding and gluing the panels together to painting to engine assembly. We also had lunch here, had a steak, it was so good, great cut and cooked perfectly.
We actually went to BMW Welt twice as we had the Mexican guys with us the first time and they didn't seem as interested, so we went on Sunday for the first time and then again on Tuesday when I did the tour. Unfortunately no cameras were allowed in the factory, but if you ever go, I highly recommend it!
We also drove through near the Alps to see the castle that the Disney castle is modelled upon, such a beautiful sight, the countryside is like driving through a golf course, the grass is so green! The quality of the roads is also much better than the UK. The autobahn wasn't actually as good as I anticipated. there was a lot of roadworks and there were limits on some sections. I did manage 240km/h at one point though, it's not all that fast, but considering it was legal, it was great!
All in all a great trip, just wasn't long enough. Some pics:
Apologies in advance as the order of some of the pics is backwards and the quality has been drastically reduced as I was lazy and linked them from FB. I took over 500 pictures so these are just a few!
edit: sorry mods, thanks for moving!
