    Alternator help

I know someone can help here
Yesterday, driving along in my astra van and the battery light came on, i went in the shop and when i came back out to start it, nothing! : I managed to get a friend to help me bump start it, which worked, only thing was, it had very limited power (dim headlights etc..)
Can i safely assume its the alternator thats packed in before i buy i recon unit, and is there any way to test with a multimeter on it? Ive got the battery on charge in the shed so ill hook that back up in the morning.

yes put the electrodes on the battery with the engine running lights on radio on and you should see 13-14 volts if you dont its knackered
if you get more than 14.4 volts its overcharging and knackered
