    Carisma coolant **FIXED**

    Morning chaps.

As some of you know, I've recently acquired a Mitsubishi Carisma.
Today I drove it about 120miles in total, and not once did the engine temp go above 1/10th on the gauge

About a year ago, the car had a brand new thermostat in it because it had the same problem. Once the thermostat was done, it would reach about half way on the gauge. A year on, and the same problem is occurring.

It can't surely need another stat in 12 months?!?!
The stat was changed for an expensive Mitsubishi part because I couldn't find any cheaper alternative.

    Thanks

How hot where the hoses Fert? Just because you have replaced the thermostat 12 months ago don't rule it out as fucked....

    It can only be either:-

    1. Thermostat
    2. Faulty temperature sender
    3. Faulty gauge

Do you have access to a temperature reader/thermocouple ?

    Re: Carisma coolant.

I didn't check the coolant hoses Kev, but I did try the heater, and on full, it's luke warm at best. The cooler the outside temp, the lower the gauge is. I suspect the gauge is reading correct.

I tried plugged up the live diagnostics to see what the coolant temp is, but that doesn't work in the Carisma, but works a treat in the 330. A little disappointing really.

When I get home, I'll get the infrared temp sensor on the coolant pipes and see what they say.

Cool heater and low reading on the gauge = faulty thermostat....

I cant remember the exact details of your NO Charisma TBH - but a diesel one is 10 on Euro mate....

I thought it might be, but thought it was a little premature for a failure. Best get it done before winter, as it can get a little nippy in the car in the dead of winter at 4.30am going to work

And if the stat costs 10 squid on ECP, then I'll be ordering one. Last year when looking, I was an impatient sod and wanted it on the day and ended up paying about 45.00 for it IIRC.

For 10 and the price of some coolant I would get it done mate, I can't think of any other reason for the low reading and cold heater....

Got plenty of coolant left from last year

Could an airlock cause this kind of issue, or am I really clutching at straws?

It could I guess.... If it where me I would pull the stat out and take a look at it, my guess is that it is stuck open mate....

Sounds like a 'stat to me too, exactly the same symptoms as mine on the Mk2 Golf when that died. Just make sure you bleed the system properly when you do it. And take the ridiculously overpriced one back and insert it into the parts department bloke's rectum, see if it opens then.
