BMW X5 Rear door panel removal, rear window regulator, motor replacement DIY guide
This guide will show you how to remove your BMW X5 rear door panel, replace your window regulator and remove your window motor, and put it all successfully back together again.
First of all remove your window switch button by prying up carefully at the front and rear of the switch.
Next starting at the back of the trim, carefully pry the trim away from the door panel, working your way along until the trim is off.
Now you can remove the T20 torx screw that lives behind the trim.
Now the T20 torx screw that lives close to the interior door handle.
And the T20 torx screw from the lower section of the door panel.
Gently prise out the puddle light from the bottom of the door panel and unplug it.
Now you can start carefully prying off the door panel away from the door, working your way all round until it is ready to pull away from the door(DO NOT PULL THE PANEL FULLY OFF AWAY FROM THE DOOR JUST YET!).
Now pull the door panel out a little at the top and you'll see a wire with a small light bulb on the end, push in the tabs and unclip the bulb, disconnect the interior handle cable(it's held in by the white plastic clip) and you're now ready to pull off the door panel.
Now pulling gently on the foam weather shield, cut around the bonding, until you have a good portion of the weather shield out of your way.
Unclip the window motor plug.
Remove the 8mm bolt that secures the window to the regulator.
Remove the 3 x 10mm nuts that secure the regulator to the door and pull the regulator out from your door.
Remove the 3 x T30 torx screws the fasten the window motor to the regulator and twist the motor anti clockwise and remove it.
Here's our new genuine regulator.
With the motor fitted back on.
Slide the regulator back in the door and tighten the 3 x 10mm nuts, then re-secure the window to the regulator and tighten the 8mm bolt, finally plug back in the window motor plug.
Refit your weather shield, I used some new bonding and taped up parts as well just to be sure.
Now you can refit your door panel, pay attention to the condition of the door clips, if any are damaged you should replace them.
When you come to fit your interior door trim, pay attention to the 3 lugs, make sure you line these up before fitting the trim fully.
Clean your window and any marks from your interior panel, and this is the job finished.
