BMW X5 E53 Centre console removal and handbrake lever, parking brake lever replacement, DIY.
Reason for this job, the handbrake ratchet had worn and the lever would no longer stay up when pulled on.
First of all remove any items in your storage spaces, ash trays, rubber mats and pull up the handbrake gaiter.
Remove armrest storage trim and unscrew 2x Philips screws.
Undo and remove 2 Philips screws and remove rear vent(disconnect 3 wiring plugs).
Release gear selector surround.(4 clips on leather surround and 3 wiring plugs).
Slide finger under hazard switch and pop out, then unscrew Philips screw.
Remove switch console and tuck wiring through hole.
With the seat forward release the rear side trims from centre console.
Move the seat back, release front trims and remove.
Remove drivers seat caps and retaining nuts/bolts(16mm).
Now you can move the seat out of the way forwards or backwards making access easier. I left the seat wiring attached so not to trigger any fault lights.
You can remove the handbrake cable nuts easily now.
Unscrew 1x Philips screw from each side and pull and remove front trims.
Unscrew 4x Philips screws from console.(2 each side, front and rear, leave the middle ones.)
Lift console slightly and disconnect passenger side white plug and pull through any remaining wires at the rear(cigarette lighter and rear heater vent wire).
Lift whole console out.
Now you can easily see the handbrake lever, remove the handbrake warning light wire.
Then pull up the carpet and remove the 3 nuts that hold down the handbrake lever.(13mm)
With the handbrake lever out you can now throw in the new one and reassemble.
Torque settings for the handbrake bolts are 28NM.
